Inception Ending Explained

Christopher Nolans Inception (2010) ends with one of cinema most debated final moments. The spinning totem, balanced precariously on the table, leaves audiences questioning reality.

The Final Scene

Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) returns home to his children after completing his mission. He spins his top on the table, walks away toward his children, and the film cuts to black before we see whether the top falls or continues spinning.

What the Top Does

Nolan deliberately left this ambiguous. In the DVD commentary, he stated: "The way the set up the film is that we are going to come into a place, we are going to come into a moment where Cobb could be in a dream and the top will be spinning... But we do not know."

Popular Theories

He is in a dream (the top never falls, he is still dreaming). He is in reality (Cobb has given up on the totem - he does not care anymore). He made it home (the children wear different clothes than in dreams). Marion Cotillard appears (Cobb late wife appearing suggests reality).

Evidence for Reality

Children ages have not changed in reality but have not in dreams either. Cobb finally turns his back, accepting reality. Cobb never wears his ring in reality. Final scene cinematography is more grounded than dream sequences.

Nolan Intention

In interviews, Nolan explained that he wanted the audience to experience Cobb uncertainty. He said the question "is it real?" does not matter - what matters is that Cobb chooses to be with his children regardless. The ambiguity is intentional and Nolan answer is essentially: "It does not matter what the top does."
